“Be master of your petty annoyances and conserve your energies for the big, worthwhile things. It isn’t the mountain ahead that wears you out – it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.”

My favorite poem by Service is, “The Cremation of Sam McGee.” Whenever I hear someone say poetry is for girls, I point them to that particular poem.
Back in 1993 my wife and I celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary with a cruise to Alaska. My favorite part of the journey was when we went to Skagway and took a helicopter ride out of Dyea, near the foot of the Chilkoot Trail. Everywhere we went we read quotes and poems by Robert Service and he has been in the back of my mind ever since.
Service definitely broke the mold when it comes to poets.
